The Future of Aviation Training: How JAA TO Embraces Modern Learning Methodology

The Power of New Technology

Earlier this year, JAA TO developed the Fundamentals of Instructional Competencies (FIC) course, a self-paced, online programme designed to empower aviation instructors with the critical competencies required to deliver ICAO-aligned, competency-based training. FIC introduces interactive micro-learning modules, gamified elements, 360° classroom explorations, and Artificial Intelligence-driven (AI) avatars, creating progressive aviation education content – the first-of-its-kind in the Training Catalogue of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Miranda Colombo, Learning & Course Development Representative at JAA TO, led the development via JAA TO's in-house Course Development Unit (CDU) in consultation with JAA TO Subject-Matter-Experts (SMEs). The scope was to translate crucial knowledge into a digital, accessible learning platform that prioritises real-world relevance and learning engagement for trainees.

In the interview below, Miranda explains JAA TO's perspective on modern adult education and future aviation training and enablement.

Q: Developing training like the FIC, what criteria guide the inclusion of interactive tools for content enhancement?

Miranda Colombo (MC): "We based our selection on adult learning principles, which emphasise that meaningful learning is driven by engagement and active participation. Since online courses can often feel passive or “boring” without interaction, we deliberately incorporated engaging interactive elements to promote deeper involvement and ensure better learning transfer."

Q: How do you determine the most effective technologies?

MC: "For our online courses, we chose to work with a leading authoring tool, Articulate Storyline, which provides a wide range of interactive features. It has also recently integrated advanced AI functionalities - including AI-generated voiceovers, script creation based on prompts, and AI-powered image generation. These innovations allow us to design more dynamic, personalised, and accessible learning experiences for our trainees."

Q: How can interactive, AI-driven learning modules be implemented effectively?

MC: "AI-enhanced modules complement the learning process by guiding participants through content and strengthening their knowledge. Feedback and identification of improvement areas remain under the guidance of JAA TO qualified instructors, ensuring that learners are well-prepared before applying skills in practical scenarios."

Q: How does AI support interactive learning? What are the limits of AI in regulatory training?

MC: "At JAA TO, we currently use AI primarily to support the creation of online and digital content - for example, generating images, voiceovers, and avatars. These tools enhance interactivity and make learning materials more engaging and accessible, especially in online environments."

..Especially in the field of aviation regulation, trainees greatly benefit from human interaction, real-life anecdotes, and the ability to ask questions to someone who has hands-on knowledge of the subject. Human instructors also play an essential role in building trust, maintaining motivation, and fostering meaningful discussions - elements that AI alone cannot provide."

Q: Why is gamification important for learners of all ages?

MC: Research shows^[1] that game-based learning can significantly improve knowledge retention and learner motivation, demonstrating that learners exposed to gamified content retained information more effectively compared to traditional instruction. This proves that gamification is not only appealing to younger generations but is also valuable for diverse target audiences. It is highly versatile and can be applied to a wide range of content."

Q: How can gamified training attract young talent to the sector?

In the context of the ICAO Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) framework, gamification becomes even more relevant. Today’s learners often have shorter attention spans and are less engaged by lengthy, lecture-style training...

...Gamification provides an effective alternative, offering bite-sized, interactive, and challenging content that keeps trainees motivated while supporting long-term knowledge retention. This makes it a powerful tool for preparing the next generation of aviation professionals."

Q: What are the benefits of trainees taking such JAA TO courses?

MC: "Recognising the diverse schedules and learning styles of aviation professionals, adaptive courses let learners progress at their own pace. AI guidance ensures each trainee receives a tailored learning experience, maximising efficiency and comprehension. With the successful implementation of FIC, JAA TO is now exploring how these modern techniques can be applied across all its training programmes. The focus on AI, interactive modules, scenario-based exercises, gamification, and self-paced learning is seen not just as a single course improvement, but as the beginning of a broader transformation."

Q: What are some technology trends shaping aviation training and workforce upskilling over the next few years?

One of the most significant technology trends shaping aviation training is the increasing realism and accessibility of Virtual Reality (VR)...

...VR provides immersive, hands-on experiences that allow learners to practice complex tasks or explore environments in a safe and controlled setting. For example, a VR-based aircraft visit could allow trainees to familiarize themselves with cockpit layouts or cabin procedures without needing direct access to the aircraft."

That said, since JAA TO is not a simulator company, the application of VR in our portfolio would naturally be more limited compared to full-flight or maintenance simulators. Instead, we see VR as a complementary tool that can enhance specific learning objectives by providing engaging, explorative environments. JAA TO's world-renowned expertise in regulatory aviation training cannot be replaced by AI alone. The established methodology, the human element and man-made "atmosphere" of traditional teaching methods will always remain essential to the safety of our industry.
